Get more from data.
As a ecological modelling specialist, Tim focuses on getting more from non-systematically collected data, whether this is opportunistic or even citizen science.

Bridging the gap between science and policy
The first step of conservation is to show that their is a problem. The second step is to demonstrate the magnitude of the problem. This is often where most science ends but this is not conservation.
Tim is passionate about taking the final and most important step, and making the hard-won science count. The majority of his projects feed directly into policy recommendations or the design of protected areas.
Projects
SDMs
Dynamic species distribution models from a myriad of data source, specialising in non-systematic data collection.
Acoustics
Analysis of acoustic data to understand occurrence, distribution and even abundance of marine mammals.
Surveys
Land and boat-based surveys of some of the most data deficient regions of the world.
Human pressures
Understanding the distribution and magnitude of anthropogenic impacts and their overlap with animals.
Plotting the wild -
the spatial blog

Even while Tim was on a short recovery break after his accident, it was a real relief and a proud moment to know that Francesca Soster was presenting Plotting the Wild's early results on species distribution modelling for cetacean conservation in Malta at ECS2025. It’s been a pleasure collaborating with Francesca and the rest of the team on this work. And… exciting news — the paper has just been accepted for publication! Keep your eyes peeled for its release 👀
